Lumpia

Lumpia is a Filipino appetizer that was introduced by the early Hokkien immigrants and traders during the 7th century (more or less). Lumpia can be found throughout the Philippine islands. They are also known as Filipino fried spring rolls. It is made from thin crepe pastry skin called “lumpia wrapper” and is filled with sweet and savory fillings typically dipped in sweet and sour sauce which enhances the flavor of the Lumpia. Lumpia is to be considered as a “finger food” here in the Philippines and is usually eaten as an appetizer or “merienda“.

There are different fillings in lumpia; beef, pork, chicken, and vegetables. It has a unique and exotic flavor that one will crave for. Lumpia is sold everywhere; on the streets, small stores, carinderias, fast food restaurants, and etc. Every lumpia is made differently. The fillings inside depend on the person making it. Each Filipino makes lumpia differently, they can make it taste however they want it to fit their preference.

Lumpia can be served in any occasions such as Fiestas, Birthdays, Anniversary, New Years, Christmas, any occasion you can think of really. Fun fact, birthdays are important to the Filipinos so you will never ever see lumpia out of the menu. Everyone loves a good-ole classic lumpia. You will enjoy it no matter how old you are.

I remember the time when I first tried lumpia. First bite into it and the flavors instantly shined. The savory and juicy flavors of the well-seasoned meat, the amazing crunch of the wrapper., the tangy taste of the sauce, it was like a roller coaster ride. A taste that you want to try over and over again.

My first time making lumpia was a disaster for me. I was quite young, and at the time, it was my sister’s birthday. We both shared the love for lumpia and food (obviously). I decided that I wanted to help my mom out in the making of lumpia. It was quite hard for me, getting the perfect amount of filling onto the wrapper so it won’t be overfilled. Nevertheless, the lumpia I made were the apple of our eyes. We could just imagine biting into it and tasting the juicy flavors of the meat an the crunch of the wrapper. Don’t worry though, I got better as time passed by.

Lumpia is one of those appetizers that you have to try. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
